JUST DO YOUR OWN SKILL

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

In this article you will learn:

1. the differences between IN THE BEGINNING, AT THE BEGINNING OF... and TO BE GOOD AT...in the motivational text.

2. practice your listening skills

3. practice your reading

Stratil si motiváciu učiť sa angličtinu? Motiváciu vôbec niečo robiť lebo sa ti veľa vecí nepodarilo? Vypočuj si text v angličtine, ktorý pre mňa nahrala moja dcéra Johanna a nechaj klauna nech ti ukáže, čo presne urobiť.

Alebo si prečítaj celý text, kde ti dám 1 tip, čo robiť, keď nevieš, čo ďalej. A nemusí to byť iba výučba angličtiny.

You can listen to an audio recording of my daughter, aged 6, reading her favourite book. I did it just to show the idea that any child can start reading in any language very fast if they do that from a book they know very well. The text they almost know by heart.

But why?

The answer can be found in the text, in the sentence where the tumbling clown is saying:

"None of you has any idea of my abilities, I was made to tumble and tumble I will."

His strong belief in knowing what he is good at and precision with which he announces this is something we ought to ponder on.

When my daughter started learning to read, she knew the story well. She was so sure she would succeed in reading it, that eventually, there was no other option for her, just to read it. The known gave her the assurance and it also supported her belief.

How can we benefit from this?

1. In case we happen to be in a situation where we lose the grounds, where we feel lost. We can use our already gained abilities to support ourselves and thus get our self-confidence back.

Just simply by doing the things we are already good at will lead us to satisfaction, followed by becoming confident.

2. When we want to be successful, content and at peace, we really'd better get rid of all the things that are not of interest to us. The things we somehow pretend to like, or do for others.

Like this simple clown.

I was made to tumble, and tumble I will.

Some tips to remember:

TO BE GOOD AT

Používame to často. Pretože v slovenčine, či češtine je tam predložka V - zvádza nás to k použitiu IN, čo nie je správne.

Príklady:

He is good at speaking English.

We are good at explaining grammar.

AT THE BEGINNING OF, IN THE BEGINNING,

AT THE END OF, IN THE END

Prvý výraz AT THE BEGINNING OF alebo AT THE END OF.. použijeme tedy, keď v aktívnej komunikácii chceme zdôrazniť, čoho sa začiatok, či koniec týka.

Príklad:

At the beginning of the lesson, all students started sharing their feelings.

At the end of the meeting, the boss repeated all the crucial points.

Druhý výraz, IN THE BEGINNING, IN THE END, nám ukazuje, kedy sa niečo udialo. Pýtame sa na to, KEDY? nazačiatku, nakonci. Je to príslovka času. Tieto výrazy preto môžeme nahradiť inými príslovkami INITIALLY, EVENTUALLY, FINALLY.

Príklad:

In the beginning, they brainstormed all the ideas.

Initially, they spoke about this idea, but later on they abandoned it.

Finally (In the end), they completed the project with good results.

Ešte pár slovíčok z textu, ktoré by mohli byť nejasné:

to believe in or to have a belief in - veriť v niečo, či niekoho, mať vieru v niečo.

Príklady:

I believe in you. He believes in knowing what is important for him.

to ponder on - uvažovat, zvažovat niečo, dobre se nad tým zamyslieť.

Príklad:

It is something to ponder on.

CONCLUSION

2. Ak sa chceš posunúť v angličtine, začni používať namiesto AT THE BEGINNING výraz INITIALLY a namiesto AT THE END výraz EVENTUALLY, prípadne FINALLY.

LINKING WORDS however, but, although, though. Viac o Linking Words v tomto článku.
